Delhi Metro seeks ₹4,280 cr more from JICA to buy coaches

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has sought ₹4,280 crore from Japan’s funding agency – Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) – to buy 476 Metro cars or coaches. The move follows overcrowding in several segments of the Delhi Metro.

JICA, which has already provided ₹16,588 crore for the Delhi Metro network, is in the process of giving an additional ₹19,335 crore for the ongoing phase-III network.

DMRC recently made a request to the Japanese government through their (Japan’s) Ambassador in India for extending financial support to fund the procurement of an additional 476 cars (coaches) at an estimated cost of around ₹4,280 crore, said a release, adding that JICA’s Vice-President Irigaki Hidetoshi had met Mangu Singh, Managing Director, DMRC.

JICA had supported DMRC in the construction of phase-I, -II and -III of the project. It has so far provided financial assistance of ₹6,356.45 crore for phase-I, ₹10,231.62 crore for phase-II, which is already operational, and is providing further assistance of ₹19,335 crore for the ongoing phase-III works, DMRC said.
