Rs. 240-cr Works Proposed for Pushkarams.

The Municipal Corporation of Rajahmundry (MCR) has submitted proposals worth Rs. 240 cr to take up various works in connection with the 'Godavari Maha Pushkaralu' (GMP), to be celebrated in July 2015. Disclosing this to Express recently, an MCR official said that the estimates were based on the assumption that eight crore pilgrims would participate in the forthcoming pushkarams as against four crore pilgrims in the 2003.

He explained that of the total amount, Rs. 60.65 cr were for the construction/repair of roads, Rs. 51 cr for construction of storm water and other drains, Rs. 31 cr for the supply of drinking water, Rs. 15 cr for the maintenance of existing streetlights and installation of new ones, Rs. 6.19 cr for the construction of community halls and provision of basic infrastructure, Rs. 2.05 cr for basic facilities at educational institutions, Rs. 9.05 cr for the development of main junctions, Rs. 8.25 cr for the development of parks, Rs. 12.56 cr for the construction of city convention centre and city square, Rs. 12.05 cr for the maintenance of sanitation, Rs. 2 cr for the construction of public toilets, Rs. 7.5 cr for the construction of temporary accommodation for the pilgrims and Rs. 21 cr for the construction of other new buildings.

The official said that meanwhile the MCR was taking steps to divert the drain water to sewage treatment plant through Nalla Channel. He added that sewage water flowing into river Godavari from the city through nine vents was creating panic among the people.
