Kerawalapitiya plant to generate power from next month

Colombo: Power and Energy Ministry announced the power generation of the Kerawalapitiya power plant will be launched from next month and will provide 200 Mega Watts (MW) to the national grid.

“The Kerawalapitiya project was initiated to conduct an immediate response to the problem and the project costs US $ 400 million. It was constructed with state funds from the Central Bank, LECO Company and the Employees Provident Fund, and would meet the annual 10% increase of the power demand,” he said.
Meanwhile the Ministry has brought down six generators which would generate 36MW of power for the Jaffna peninsula.

“The power supply will be started within the next two weeks after the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) assembles the generators,” the spokesman said.

Ministry’s spokesman Harsha B. Abeykoon said that an annual power generation of 150 MW was required after 2002, and the failure of generating it had created the present power crisis.
