"Uttar Pradesh Government Kickstarts Bidding Process for 7,000 MW Solar Energy Projects"
Uttar Pradesh is actively moving towards expanding its renewable energy portfolio by inviting bids for the generation of 7,000 megawatts (MW) of solar energy. Currently facing a daily energy demand of 28,000 MW, the state is strategically targeting a solar energy output of 25,000 MW in the medium to long term to meet the escalating power needs across domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors.
Aiming to address the rising power demands, Energy Minister A K Sharma announced that the state would soon initiate bids for 4,000 MW in solar energy, with an additional bidding process for another 3,000 MW planned for the second phase.
The push for solar energy generation is not only driven by environmental considerations but is also viewed as a strategic move to curtail losses incurred by state power utilities. Currently estimated at around ₹46 crores per day due to factors such as line losses, subsidized power supply, and sub-optimal bill realization, solar energy projects are expected to contribute significantly to mitigating these losses.
Minister Sharma emphasized the abundant potential Uttar Pradesh holds in the renewable energy sector, encouraging foreign companies to invest in the state. In a recent meeting with a delegation of Japanese entrepreneurs led by Japan Ambassador to India Hiroshi Suzuki, Sharma extended an invitation for Japanese investment in the renewable and solar energy segments. The UP government has assured Japanese companies that it will procure all solar power generated in their captive plants.
To support the ambitious renewable energy goals, the state has drafted solar energy and bioenergy policies, with a hydro energy policy also in the pipeline. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh is formulating biofuel and energy storage policies to create a comprehensive framework for both domestic and foreign investors. These initiatives are aimed at reducing dependence on coal-fired thermal power generation and, in turn, curbing carbon emissions.
In a recent development, Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel highlighted the potential for collaboration between Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh in the renewable energy and food processing sectors. This discussion took place during Patel's visit to Lucknow as part of a roadshow leading up to the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit scheduled for January 10-12, 2024.
