US Extends Sanction Waiver for Chabahar Port by Six Months, Allowing India to Continue Project Work.
The United States has extended the sanction waiver for India’s development of Iran’s Chabahar port for another six months, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday.
“With regard to the Chabahar port in Iran, we have been granted exemption for a six-month period from US sanctions,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a weekly media briefing.
Sources said the extension will allow India to continue its project work at the strategically important port “as usual.” The waiver ensures that India’s investments and activities at Chabahar — seen as a key trade and connectivity hub linking India with Afghanistan and Central Asia — can proceed without interruption despite ongoing US sanctions on Iran.
The Chabahar port project, developed by India in partnership with Iran, is considered crucial for regional connectivity and for bypassing Pakistan in accessing landlocked Afghanistan.
