Tata plans power output from renewable energy sources
Mumbai: In the next 10 years, Tata Power Company plans to produce 25 per cent of its total power output from renewable energy sources.
It would be concentrating on wind, geothermal and hydro sources for the generation, said Mr Prasad Menon, Managing Director of the company.
He was interacting with the media on Friday, after a roundtable discussion on climate change.
Mr Menon said that it is in the strategic interest of the company to support sustainable energy. Even as the company is investing in thermal coal projects it is also exploring possibilities for investing in green energy.
For combating climate change, the renewable energy policy is already in place but it needs to be implemented in an appropriate manner, he said.
“For every unit of power produced by the company’s plants, the emission is 750 kg of carbon dioxide. We want to bring down this figure” Mr Menon said. Mr Banmali Agrawala, Executive Director (Strategy and Business Development), said that company’s first geothermal plant, would soon be operational on pilot scale and produce 1 MW of power.
Tata Power wants to source about 500 MW of power from geothermal sources over a period of time, he said.
