"NLC India to Announce Decision on ₹19,422 Crore Talabira Power Project Contract this Friday"

In a highly anticipated development, the recipient of the ₹19,422 crore contract for NLC India’s ambitious 3x800 MW Talabira thermal power project is poised to be unveiled this Friday as the sealed price bids are set to be opened.

As reported by BusinessLine on December 6, 2022, the competition for the lucrative contract primarily involves two formidable contenders in the realm of power equipment manufacturing - BHEL and L&T-MHI.

NLC's Chairman and Managing Director, M Prasanna Kumar, disclosed to BusinessLine today that the turnkey contractor for what he termed a "signature project" is expected to be finalized in January.

In a strategic move, NLC India has decided to augment the project by incorporating an additional 800 MW unit, transforming the Talabira thermal power project into a formidable 3,200 MW powerhouse upon completion.

Originally conceptualized for establishment in Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu, the project underwent a location shift to Talabira in Odisha, a decision attributed to cost-saving measures associated with transporting coal from Talabira mines to southern regions. Notably, the thermal plants envisioned for the project are classified as ultra-supercritical, characterized by exceedingly high steam temperatures and pressures, approximately 600 degrees Celsius and 240 bar, respectively. This design enhances efficiency, ensuring a higher power output per unit of fuel consumed.

The 2,400 MW power generated by the project is earmarked for distribution among various regions, with Tamil Nadu set to receive 1,500 MW, Puducherry allocated 100 MW, Karnataka slated for 400 MW, and Odisha securing 400 MW. The outcome of Friday's bid opening will undoubtedly mark a pivotal moment in the realization of this significant energy initiative.
