MRPL Receives KG 98/2 Crude Oil from ONGC
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) welcomed the inaugural shipment of ONGC's newly explored crude oil, KG 98/2, in an event held on Saturday in Mangaluru.
The shipment, carried by the vessel Swarna Sindhu, was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2. KG 98/2, characterized as sweet (low sulfur) indigenous crude, is set to undergo processing into various fuels and petrochemicals at MRPL's facilities in Mangaluru.
According to a media statement, KG 98/2 represents ONGC's recent exploration success in the Krishna Godavari basin, following a substantial investment of ₹30,000 crore in deep and ultra-deep field explorations, despite natural and technical challenges.
M Shyamprasad Kamth, Managing Director of MRPL, praised the contribution of ONGC's technical capabilities and commitment to India's energy self-sufficiency through crude oil production.
The addition of KG 98/2 to India's crude oil and natural gas production potential is expected to result in a significant 7% increase at its peak.
Sanjay Varma, Director (Refinery) of MRPL, underscored the event's significance in India's energy landscape and its role in unlocking the nation's economic potential during the Amrit Kal.
MRPL, a coastal refinery equipped with three distinct crude distillation units and essential supporting infrastructure, boasts a diverse crude oil basket comprising 250 varieties sourced globally. Over 100 of these crude oils have already been processed at the Mangaluru refinery complex, as highlighted in the statement.
