Second phase of redevelopment of Prayagraj junction begins

The second phase of the redevelopment of Prayagraj Junction has commenced, focusing on both heritage preservation and modern development. This stage involves constructing a 72-meter wide concourse on the Civil Lines side of the junction, with piling work now in progress.

The current construction phase requires the closure of platform numbers seven and eight for piling, and these platforms will remain closed until June 11. Previously, similar work was completed on platform numbers nine and ten in February. Additionally, 27 trains that previously arrived at platform number eight have been redirected to Cheoki railway station.

Prayagraj Junction has been allocated the highest budget for station redevelopment in the country, totaling Rs. 960 crore. The first phase included laying the foundation for a new building on the Civil Lines side. The redevelopment's foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing on August 6.

The goal of the redevelopment is to provide world-class facilities akin to those at airports. This includes modernizing the railway colony, which was evacuated in March and demolished in April, and the main structural work, which is expected to be completed by the end of October 2024. The second phase will run from February 1, 2025, to December 2026.

Among the significant developments is the construction of a modern nine-story barrack for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) with a capacity for 200 personnel. This barrack is being built at a cost of Rs 14.81 crore.

The redesigned Prayagraj Junction will offer various amenities for passengers, such as spacious food courts, shopping areas, VIP lounges, and multi-level parking. Accessibility improvements include ramps, automated stairs, and lifts for platform access. According to Amit Kumar Sin, the public relations officer (PRO) for the Prayagraj division of NCR, "The station will feature 42 lifts and 39 escalators, ensuring smooth and convenient passenger movement."

With these enhancements, Prayagraj Junction aims to meet the highest standards of convenience and comfort for travelers, while simultaneously embracing its rich heritage.
