Japanese team offers to set up waste treatment plant in city.

A Japanese delegation has offered to set up a solid waste treatment plant in the city free of cost.

The plant would require 15 cents and six months to complete and could process up to four tonnes a day. The Kochi Corporation has asked the delegation to submit a detailed presentation on the operational cost and other factors to be placed before the corporation council.

The project would be funded by the Japan government, the delegation told the civic authorities.

The delegation informed the council that it would be an environment-friendly project that would be set up in Kochi and it would be handed over to the Corporation for operations. It was the first such proposal from the delegation in India and the city need not pay for setting up the plant, they said. The delegation led by Masaru Tanaka, president, Research Institute of Solid Waste Management Engineering, had Harumichi Miwa, Manabu Ishida, Masafumi Yasue, Haruto Takahashi, and Masami Yamada as its members.

On a question from K.J. Jacob, the leader of the Opposition in the Corporation, the delegation said the plant would process biodegradable waste. Mayor Soumini Jain, Deputy Mayor T.J. Vinod, and Standing Committee chairpersons A.B. Sabu, V.K. Minimol, Shiny Mathew and P.M. Haris were present.
