Bhel commissions GVK's hydro-power project in Uttarakhand.

State-owned power equipment maker Bhel has commissioned GVK Group's 82.5 MW greenfield hydro electric project in Uttarakhand.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. said in a regulatory filing that it has 'successfully commissioned the first unit of 82.5 MW at the upcoming Shrinagar Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Uttarakhand'.

'The greenfield hydro electric project consisting of four units of 82.5 MW each is being set up by Alaknanda Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (GVK Group),' said the Bhel filing to the BSE.

The project is located on the Alaknanda River (near the town of Shrinagar in Pauri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand), a major tributary of the Ganga.

The project is designed to utilise the waters of River Alaknanda by way of a diversion dam.

Bhel said power generation from Shrinagar HEP is likely to result in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Bhel's responsibilities in the project include design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of 4 units of 82.5 MW francis turbines, among other works.

At present, the company is executing hydro electric projects of around 4,000 MW which are under various stages of implementation.
