The Andhra Pradesh government has issued a call for global expressions of interest (EoI) to establish a comprehensive shipbuilding, repair, and maritime decarbonization cluster in the state. This initiative aligns with India's maritime strategy and global decarbonization goals, aiming to position the region as a key player in the evolving shipbuilding industry.
The state government has pledged support in the form of infrastructure development, expedited clearances, fiscal incentives, and logistical assistance. In the EoI document, the government emphasized that a well-developed shipbuilding cluster would bolster maritime infrastructure, attract both domestic and international investments, and contribute to India's vision of becoming a global hub for shipbuilding. The project also supports the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” campaigns, promoting technology indigenization and reducing reliance on imports.
The proposed cluster will integrate all key components of the shipbuilding industry, from raw materials and ancillary industries to logistics, testing, and shipbuilding academies. It will also focus on advanced technologies and sustainable practices, addressing the industry's growing demand while contributing to decarbonization efforts in the maritime sector. The cluster will include facilities such as shipyards, dry docks, repair units, and green ship recycling centers that adhere to environmental standards.
Andhra Pradesh's strategic location along India’s 1,053 km eastern coastline, along with its access to major shipping routes and skilled workforce, offers a significant advantage for the development of this shipbuilding hub. The state’s robust infrastructure, including major ports and well-connected road, rail, and air networks, further enhances its appeal.
Firms are invited to submit proposals for innovative projects that could contribute to the cluster’s growth, including green technologies, electric vessels, and fuel-efficient systems. The government aims to create a platform for global collaboration, bringing cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices to the region, while also establishing academies and training centers to develop a skilled workforce.
This initiative underscores Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a global leader in sustainable shipbuilding and repair, supporting both industrial growth and environmental sustainability.
