Zoological park work to begin soon.

After a wait of three decades, the stalemate over the construction of the Puthur zoological park is finally over.

After a high-level meeting here on Thursday, Minister of Forests, Animal Husbandry, and Zoos K. Raju said the first phase work would begin on 110 acres in the 330-acre park as soon as permission was received from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board.

The Central Public Works Department had been asked to prepare an estimate of the construction, power supply, and water distribution, he said.

The Irrigation Department and the water authority would be in charge of construction of a check-dam and intake well on the Manali Puzha for the water needs of the park. The Central Public Works Department had been given the construction works. An amount of ₹10.29 crore had been handed over to the CPWD, Mr. Raju said.

Tenders for cages

Tenders had been given for cages of birds, monkeys and gaur.

“The cages will be prepared to suit the behaviour of wild animals. Work will be started with the amount allotted in the budget,” the Minister said. Efforts would be on to improve the biodiversity of the forest at Puthur. A special team had been appointed to monitor the works, the Minister added.

The zoo in Thrissur is at present situated on 13 acres in the heart of the city. The proposal to shift the zoo to a more spacious area at Puthur had been delayed due to various reasons.

Though foundation stones were laid three times earlier, the zoological park remained a non-starter.

The spacious forest area at Puthur is expected to provide ample space for birds and animals. Proximity of Puthur to the Kerala Forest Research Institute and the Kerala Agriculture University is expected to enable more studies and research.
