Roof work at Coimbatore junction to be completed soon.
As part of improvement of passenger amenities, the front elevation of the Coimbatore Railway Junction is being spruced up with a shelter, officials said.
According to sources, the works on the shelter along the front elevation and roofs for Platform 1A from the subway are being carried out at a cost of ₹ 55 lakh.
The shelter is being extended on Platform 1A for about 30 meters up to the end of the mosque. Construction of basement (three pillars) to fix railings for the roofs has already begun. The roof work is expected to be completed in a month’s time.
The official sources said that the work on installing a shelter along the elevation was being undertaken up to the pedestal of the rail engine kept on the front side of the junction. The roof work had been bifurcated into two sections with 6 meters wide on either side for easy movement of the passengers.
Apart from these, two lifts are also being commissioned, one for Platforms 1 and 2 and another for Platforms 3 and 4.
The proposal to construct skywalk to reach all the platforms from the front side was shelved for want of land along the mosque side. However, escalators were fixed to reach the advance reservation counters a few months ago, the sources added.
