Almost 35% of New Port Project in Doha complete.

Nearly 35 percent of the USD 7.4 billion New Port Project (NPP) in Doha has already been completed. The first phase is expected to be launched in 2016, said Nabeel Mohammed Al Buenain, Project Executive Director, New Port Project (NPP) in an exclusive interview to Oxford Business Group.

The first phase of the NPP would have a capacity of 2 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) and 1.5 million tonnes of general cargo. Upon full completion the entire port is expected to handle up to 6 million TEUs.

According to Al-Buenain, The new port will not only function as a new seaport but will also host a base for the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3. The priority is to complete the section before 2016 in order for the port to be operational.

The existing Doha Port has a depth of around 12.5 meters, which cannot accommodate large container vessels. On the other hand, the new port's basin will be approximately 3.8 kilometers in length, 700 meters wide with a depth of 17 meters and will be able to take in large vessels.

The New Doha Project, which is spread over 26.5 square kilometers, is top priority to the government and part of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
