Cochin-Coimbatore Industrial Corridor (CCIC) project : Submitted to center for clearance

The conceptual report on the Cochin-Coimbatore Industrial Corridor (CCIC) project envisages 12 self-contained industrial townships on either side of the rail and road network connecting the industrial cities of Cochin and Coimbatore.

The project is estimated to require 13,000 acres of land. Mahindra Consulting Engineers Limited, Chennai, which has prepared the report on behalf of the state-run Infrastructure Kerala Limited (INKEL), has already identified the land for this in the three districts Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts, despite the reports of extreme land scarcity in the State.

The report broadly estimates that the project would cost about Rs 23,000 crore, including the land acquisition component, whereas it is expected to attract an investment of rupees one lakh crore. The project is slated to generate one lakh direct employments and five lakh indirect job opportunities in multiple sectors, according to informed sources..

Conceived as the dream project of the Kerala government the CCIC is expected to drastically alter the industrial landscape of the State in the next couple of years.

Kerala govt has already submitted the report to the Centre for clearance.

Some components of the project are to be implemented on PPP mode while the Governments at the Centre and State will have to be the driver for the remaining part.

The proposed townships has been designed along the '`walk to work'' concept with people staying close to their place of work. The report envisages setting up of industrial clusters in various sectors like chemical industry, textiles, engineering and agro-based industries, highly placed sources associated with the project said.

The CCIC has many similarities with the proposed Mumbai-Delhi industrial Corridor project, which also envisages industrial clusters on either side of a dedicated freight corridor linking the two metro cities.
